The 2,500 year old healing art of Thai Yoga Massage has roots in Yoga, Ayurvedic medicine, and Buddhist spiritual practice. This interactive form of bodywork combines yoga therapy, assisted stretching, gentle rocking, acupressure, and rhythmic compression along Sen (energy) lines. At all times the pace is smooth, harmonious and relaxing. Thai massage works to stimulate, open and balance the flow of energy to assist the body in its natural tendency toward self-healing.
Thai massage is quite different from Swedish or deep tissue massage. While many practitioners have adapted and integrated Thai yoga massage into their table routine, traditional Thai massage is practiced on a comfortable mat or futon on the floor instead of a table. No oil or lotion is used and the client wears loose, comfortable clothing such as a T-shirt and sweatpants to allow maximum comfort while stretching.
While it does include work by the practitioner kneading muscles, Thai massage is best known for its vast array of passive stretches. Some people call it "assisted yoga". The practitioner may use her hands, forearms, elbows, and feet to massage while assisting the client in moving through a logical progression of asanas, or yoga stretching exercises.
While Swedish massage focuses heavily on the neck and shoulders, Thai massage works systematically through the entire body, literally from the tips of the toes to the crown of the head. The effect is to increase energy levels, melt away stress and tension, improve flexibility and bring balance to the body, mind and spirit. These treatments are very thorough, stretching and massaging the entire body, and can last anywhere from 1 ½ to 2 hours.
Not surprisingly for a therapy that originates from the 'Land of Smiles', this wonderful art also brings a great happiness within and a big smile without.
